Wicker Park One-Year Session | The Michel Family

Filed in: Family Session

Oh, how time flies! I feel like it was just yesterday that I was capturing the day for one of my favorite couples back in 2021—a wedding full of laughter, love, and those beautiful moments that make my job so special. (Take a peek inside their big day for even more feels.) Fast forward to fall 2024, and I’m catching up with these wonderful humans again, only this time it’s to celebrate their little boy, Sammy, turning ONE! And his one-year session was too cute for words…almost!

We met up at their neighborhood park here in Wicker Park, and let me tell you, this session brought all the feels. Sammy is officially on the move now, mastering those wobbly first steps like a little champ. Watching him explore the world—with that wide-eyed fascination and sweet toddler curiosity—was pure joy. He was particularly fascinated with all the dogs out for their morning walks, which made for the cutest little moments mid-shoot.

The Best “Job” in the World!

I often say that photographing past clients feels like reconnecting with old friends, and this family is no exception. It’s such a privilege to witness and document their evolution over the years—from newlyweds to proud parents chasing after their happy, giggling one-year-old. Sessions like these remind me why I love what I do.

And speaking of sessions, if you’re gearing up for your family shoot, I’ve put together a list of simple prop ideas to elevate your outdoor photos (without making it feel like a Pinterest explosion). These are tried-and-true ways to keep things manageable, fun, and stress-free—because we all know how unpredictable little ones can be!

Simple Prop Ideas for Outdoor Photoshoots

Whether you’re planning a one-year session, family shoot, or simply looking for inspiration, incorporating a prop or two can add a fun, personalized touch to your photos! Of course, keeping things simple is key—especially with little ones who are curious, easily overstimulated, or just want to run around and explore (looking at you, Sammy!). Here are a few easy prop ideas that can enhance your session without overwhelming the moment:

Picnic Setup

A cozy blanket, a basket, and some snacks can create a warm, laid-back vibe. Bonus: snacks double as a distraction if your little one needs a quick break.

Family Pet

If you’ve got a furry family member, bring them along! They’re part of the story, too, and kids love interacting with their pets during the session. (Although I do recommend asking a friend to be on pet duty so they can take your furry friend once their portion of the shoot is finished.)

Bubbles

Bubbles are a crowd-pleaser for kids of all ages. They photograph beautifully and create spontaneous, natural moments of joy (not to mention they’re easy to carry).

Pinwheel Wind Catchers

Fun, colorful, and interactive—pinwheels are perfect for little hands to hold while exploring, and I’ve yet to meet a toddler who wasn’t mesmerized by them.

A Wagon

Whether your toddler is riding in it or pulling it around, a wagon adds a playful, childhood touch.

Sunglasses and/or a Cap

These can be both functional and adorable, especially for spring and summer sessions. Plus, some kids love playing dress-up!

Flower Bouquet or Head Wreath

Great for a pop of color and a sweet, whimsical feel.

A Chair or Chalkboard

A small, kid-sized chair can help ground a high-energy toddler for a few seconds, while a cute chalkboard can add a personalized touch. On that note, sidewalk chalk can be super cute, too!

Popsicle or Ice Cream

These are so nostalgic and perfect for summer shoots! Just be ready for sticky fingers and giggles.

Sprinklers or Water Play (at home)

If you’re doing a backyard shoot, water play can lead to fun, candid moments, especially in warmer weather.

Simple Toys

Think airplanes, binoculars, or anything your little one loves and interacts with. These can keep them occupied while showcasing their personality.

Park Playground or Swings

Sometimes the best “props” are already there! Let your kiddo play and explore—it’s where those authentic smiles really shine.

A Book

Whether it’s a favorite photo album or a quirky board book, reading moments can create an intimate, cozy vibe.

Less is More

The key to making the most of any family photoshoot is keeping things relaxed and true to you. If props feel unnecessary or overwhelming, skip them entirely. Your family’s love, connection, and shared moments are more than enough to tell a beautiful story.

As for little Sammy, his curiosity and joy were the best props of all. Watching him walk, laugh, and light up at the world around him reminded me just how magical this stage of life is. Here’s to celebrating all the milestones—big and small—and cherishing the memories along the way.

Ready to Book Your Kiddo’s One-Year Session?

To Sammy’s family: thank you for letting me capture this milestone for you. Watching your love story grow from newlyweds to parents has been an absolute honor. Families like yours make my job so deeply rewarding and meaningful. The way you laugh together, the way you support each other, and now, the way you nurture little Sammy as he discovers the world—it’s all so beautiful to witness. I can’t wait to see what’s next for your journey. I’m already looking forward to the day when we get to do this all over again, whether it’s for another milestone, a holiday session, or simply just because. Thank you for trusting me to document these fleeting moments that become lifelong memories.

And to anyone reading this who might be considering a family session, here’s my advice: don’t wait. Life moves fast, and these precious seasons—those wobbly steps, gap-toothed grins, tight hugs, and belly laughs—deserve to be captured. Your story, in all its messy, beautiful, one-of-a-kind glory, is worth documenting. And guess what? You don’t need a special occasion. Sometimes, the love and connection you share right now is reason enough. So whether it’s a walk in the park, a cozy morning at home, or a playful afternoon with your little ones, let’s create something you’ll treasure forever. Because years from now, when you’re flipping through these photos or showing them to your grown-up kiddos, you’ll be so glad you did. 💛
