Martina and Grahm’s wedding was just over one year ago, and what better way to celebrate their anniversary than with an intimate in-home couple’s session? I was so excited to be reunited with their darling pup Melrose, who made a surprise guest appearance at the wedding last year. (Grahm earned big brownie points by surprising Martina with a quick visit before the ceremony.)
For their at home photoshoot, their home was warm, bright, and so comfortable. It’s often easier for a couple to relax and have fun when they are at home. While we did most of their session indoors, we did pop out into their backyard to take advantage of the beautiful fall leaves adorning their trees. It was so fun to catch up and get this awesome couple behind my lens again.
Martina and Grahm did a fabulous job prepping their home for their photoshoot. Their home is already beautiful, and they both have an eye for design. They just put a few finishing touches here and there to add beauty to our lifestyle compositions without taking away from the real stars of the show—the happy couple and their adorable floppy-eared pup.
How to Prep Your Home for an In-Home Lifestyle Session
If you’re worried about gathering up your Pinterest boards to flip your home before your upcoming at home photoshoot, hold on just a minute. There’s no need to revamp your place unless you just want to. Often, less is more, and your photos should reflect you and your tastes more than a perfectly curated magazine. You do live here, after all. With a few minor tweaks, your home will be ready to go! From decluttering and organizing to adding small touches of style and personality, there are a few little things you can do to have your home photo-ready. By paying attention to details such as lighting, angles, and a tad bit of staging, you can create stunning lifestyle images that reveal the true you.
Declutter & Organize Your Space
Start by decluttering your home and organizing your belongings. Remove unnecessary items from surfaces, such as appliances, cords, and knickknacks. Clearing countertops does wonders! A clean and clutter-free will help create a sense of spaciousness and allow the focus to be on you and your loved ones.
Next, pay attention to the smaller details. Clean windows, dust off surfaces, and vacuum or sweep the floors. A little tidying can make a big difference in the overall appearance of your home and eliminate distractions.
Create a Cozy and Inviting Atmosphere
To make your space feel extra cozy, consider the lighting, colors, and textures in your home. Soft, natural light is ideal for capturing warm and inviting images, so open curtains and blinds to let in as much natural light as possible. Let me know if natural light is limited, and we can look at our options.
A few pops of color are great if that’s your style, but if you want to add any pieces to make your space cozier, consider neutral or muted hues. Mix and match textures like cozy blankets, plush pillows, and textured rugs to create visual interest and warmth.
Incorporate Personal Touches & Meaningful Props
Remember, the goal is to create a comfortable space that reflects your style. Don’t be afraid to incorporate elements that are meaningful to you, such as family heirlooms, artwork, or personal photographs. These personal touches will add character to your photos and make them more meaningful and memorable.
Some couples or families like to incorporate personal touches and meaningful props that represent their hobbies, interests, or shared memories as a family. For example, if you love cooking, you could include some of your favorite cookbooks or kitchen items in the photos. If you enjoy gardening or spending time outside, let’s head outdoors!
The key is to choose props that are meaningful to you and reflect your unique story. These props will make your photos more personal and memorable.
Posing and interacting naturally during the photo session
Finally, when it comes to the actual photo session, it’s important to pose and interact naturally. Lifestyle photography is about capturing candid moments and genuine emotions, so go ahead and be yourself. Here are a few tips to help you feel more comfortable in front of the camera:
1. Trust your photographer: I will guide you and capture your best moments, and I’m here to help you find the best angles, lighting, and poses to make you look your best.
2. Be present & engaged: Instead of focusing on the camera, focus on each other. Interact naturally and enjoy the moment. Laugh, play, and have fun together.
3. Embrace imperfections: Lifestyle photography is not about perfection. Embrace imperfections and let your true selves shine through. Don’t worry about little things that may be out of place in your home or your outfits. I promise, real life photographs more beautifully than you think.
