Engagement photos are a beautiful way to tell a couple’s story. When they include thoughtful, personal touches, they become even more meaningful. Filip and Ashley’s Garfield Park Conservatory engagement session was a perfect example of how a shared symbol—in their case, the fern—can add layers of significance to the photos. Filip proposed to Ashley in November at GPC, so it was fitting to return to such a gorgeous location for their engagement photos. From Ashley’s fern-inspired nails and tights to the verdant conservatory that celebrated their love of this meaningful plant, their shoot was infused with personality in subtle yet impactful ways. These two had never taken professional photos before, but strolling around their element, they were complete naturals in front of the lens.

Note: Garfield Park Conservatory is a wonderful wintertime location in Chicago. It offers a beautiful backdrop and atmosphere when the rest of outdoor Chicago can be so questionable weather-wise. Plus, the natural backdrop is a versatile setting for most themes if you aren’t sure where to go. GPC is one of my all-time favorite photo locations.

Why Incorporate a Theme or Symbol Into Your Couple’s Photoshoot

There’s something special about weaving a meaningful symbol or theme into an engagement session. It adds depth, transforms the photos into something uniquely yours, and tells a story you’ll treasure for years to come. Filip and Ashley’s love for ferns was a charming detail and a thread that tied everything together so beautifully in their Garfield Park Conservatory engagement session.

Examples of Themes or Symbols to Tie Into Your Session

Not sure if a theme is right for you? It doesn’t necessarily need to be an object. Here are some common themes couples bond over:

  • Sports/Team
  • Travel
  • Art/Entertainment
  • Hobbies
  • Books
  • Animals
  • Locations
  • Food
  • Wine/beer
  • A meaningful color
  • A shared job industry (maybe you met in a hospital setting)
  • A milestone
  • A shared experience

How to Seamlessly Incorporate a Theme into Your Engagement Session

If you’re planning your own session and want to subtly incorporate a meaningful symbol or theme, here are a few thoughtful tips to make it feel organic and tasteful:

Start with the Story

Think about what holds meaning in your relationship—a favorite hobby, a shared love for a specific place, or even an inside joke that solidifies your bond. Filip and Ashley’s fern adoration ties to their cat, Fern; more profoundly, ferns represent new beginnings. Having a theme rooted in something personal ensures it feels authentic, not forced (as you often see on Pinterest).

Incorporate It Into Your Wardrobe

This is one of the most subtle ways to bring your theme to life. Ashley’s fern-adorned nails and black tights were such a graceful nod to their connection to this meaningful motif. Whether it’s a small embroidered detail on a jacket, earrings, a printed dress, or even a pair of socks, those tiny, intentional touches feel so special upon a closer glance. Think about objects, patterns, or colors that resonate with your story, and weave them into your wardrobe naturally.

Choose a Fitting Location

Just as Garfield Park Conservatory’s Fern Room perfectly reflected Filip and Ashley’s affinity for ferns, selecting a meaningful location can create a beautiful backdrop that enhances your theme. It might be the place where you first met, a favorite hangout spot, a stadium, a museum, or simply somewhere that reflects your shared interests. The setting can subtly reflect your journey together.

Use Props with Purpose

Props can be a beautiful way to incorporate a theme, but the key is to keep them subtle and cohesive. For example, if sunflowers are your thing, adding them to a bouquet or incorporating a floral blanket for a cozy shot could work wonderfully. If you’re shooting a lifestyle session at home, you might place a vase of cheery sunflowers on the counter in the background. Keep props understated—they’re meant to enhance, not overshadow.

Let the Theme Emerge Through Intentional Posing

You don’t have to physically hold or wear your symbol for it to shine—how you interact with your surroundings can tell a story on its own. For instance, Ashley and Filip expressed their love for ferns by holding hands and strolling through the lush conservatory, with the ferns naturally weaving their way into the background. Work with your photographer to brainstorm poses or compositions that echo the feeling of your theme.

Think Symbolically

Tying in symbols doesn’t always have to be literal. For example, ferns symbolize growth and new beginnings. Maybe for your story, that’s represented by a sunrise or a path in the woods—something that visually speaks to that symbolism without being overly obvious. I’d love to chat pre-session about how we can convey abstract ideas through your surroundings, poses, or lighting.

Let the Details Shine

Sometimes, the smallest, quietest details make the biggest impact. Ashley’s nails or even the Garfield Park Conservatory’s fern logo are subtly present in their photos. These details can feel like little Easter eggs in your session. Consider adding touches like this that may only be noticed upon closer inspection—they’ll make your photos feel layered and intentional.

Lean into the Season

If possible, tie your theme into the season to create a cohesive look. For example, ferns might appear in wreaths or winter greenery for a winter engagement session. Spring or summer might work well if your theme is floral or bright. Using seasonal elements can elevate the mood while keeping your theme central.

Be Yourselves

And finally, one of the most essential things during your session is to come as you are. Filip and Ashley had never done a professional shoot before, but their open minds and trust in the process (and me!) helped them shine naturally. Your connection, your joy, and your story are what make the theme come alive. It’s as much about who you are as it is about the setting or details.

Create Love-Story Art with Meg

At the end of the day, the goal is to tell your story in a way that feels meaningful and true to who you are as a couple. When done thoughtfully, incorporating a meaningful symbol into your session can elevate your photos from beautiful portraits to deeply personal memories. It doesn’t need to be loud or obvious—the quiet, understated moments are often the most powerful. With intentional details, artsy creativity, and an open heart, your theme won’t just adorn your photos—it’ll bring your story to life. ❤️
