Capturing families as they grow is always a joy. The Short family has been one of my favorites to photograph over the years. From two maternity sessions to now welcoming their second newborn, I’ve watched them transform from just Mom and Dad to a lively family of four. If you’re welcoming a new baby and have others littles to capture, at-home family newborn photography is the best way to go!
This time, I had the pleasure of meeting little Logan and catching up with my buddy, big brother Jordan. Their Oak Park home is filled with light, laughter, and a little chaos—just the way I like it!
The session was a delightful whirlwind, capturing moments that are as priceless as they are real. Imagine an “It’s a Girl!” bouquet on the table, a toddler basketball hoop ready for action, and little fingers exploring nostrils just as the shutter clicks. Messy? Yes. Perfect? Absolutely.

What Parents Need to Know About At-Home Family Newborn Photography
Got two, three, or more little ones? The thought of a family photo session might seem daunting. Nap schedules, snack requests, sibling antics—it’s a lot. But trust me, it’s worth it—especially when it’s in your own cozy corner of the world. In-home photography is all about capturing your family as you are right now: beautifully wild and undeniably yours.

What to Expect from an In-Home Photo Session
These sessions are flexible, fun, and led by your little ones. Forget about perfect poses. I’m here to catch the rhythm of your family, whatever that looks like. Need a snack break or a quick diaper change? No problem. We roll with it.
How long are family photography sessions?
Typically, newborn sessions last about about 60 to 90 minutes—enough time to ease into the session, follow your children’s lead, and keep things relaxed.
Will you work around our schedule?
Of course! We’ll chat about nap times and find the perfect window when everyone’s (hopefully) in their best mood.
Preparing Your Home for a Photo Shoot (No Deep Clean Needed)
Worried about your home not being spotless? Don’t be. We’ll focus on areas with good natural light, like the living room, bedroom, or nursery, so you can lightly tidy those spaces.
What if my house is small or dark?
That’s ok! I’ve got a knack for finding light and beauty in any space. Whether you’ve got a cozy nook or an open-concept space filled with light, we’ll strike a balance and make it work.
Do we need to hide toys and kid/baby stuff?
Not at all. Your home should feel like home. A few favorite toys, a basket of blocks, or a blanket fort can add personality to your photos. Just a quick tidy for safety as we move around is all you need.

Managing the Chaos (and Capturing the Magic)
With multiple kids, chaos is part of the charm. I’m a mom, too. I don’t expect perfect behavior or synchronized smiles. Some of the best photos come from unscripted moments—giggles, toddler negotiations, or a cuddle gone sideways—literally.
What if the kids won’t cooperate?
Honestly, I’d be surprised if they did! I’m a pro at going with the flow. If your toddler needs to show me their favorite stuffy for 10 minutes, we’ll make it work (and sneak in some heartwarming shots along the way).
Do you take individual portraits too?
Yes! I capture both group shots and solo moments with each child. For this session, we combined sweet Logan’s newborn portraits with family portraits and even some playful milestone shots of big brother Jordan who is growing bigger and sillier by the day. (Look how much he’s grown since our Garfield Park Conservatory maternity session just a few months ago!)
What to Wear (Keep it Simple)
Choosing outfits for everyone can feel like a challenge. Keep it simple and soft, so the focus stays on your family.
Tips for dressing everyone:
- Start with a neutral base: cream, soft gray, tan, or muted pastels.
- Add subtle patterns or textures like knits, linen, or denim.
- Avoid logos or bright colors that might clash (consider your home decor and color palette).
- Comfort over formality—especially for the kids. That’s the beauty of a home session.
Bonus tip: Lay all the outfits out together and snap a quick photo. If it feels cohesive, you’re good to go. Need a second opinion? Send it my way!
Including the Parents (Yes, You!)
You belong in these photos, too. It might feel vulnerable, especially postpartum and sleep-deprived, but your kids will remember that you were there, not what you were wearing.
I’ll guide you into natural interactions—cuddles on the couch, kitchen dances, nursing your newborn, or floor playtime. No need to “pose.” Just be yourself.

Capture the Magic of the Moment (Even When You’re Tired)
In-home family newborn photography isn’t about staging perfection but instead capturing the sweet, silly, and tender moments of this wild chapter—diaper changes, snack breaks, and all.
As your photographer, I’m here to meet you where you are, celebrate your family, and make you feel truly seen. No need to stage anything. Your life, just as it is, is more than enough.
