Next, we headed to Dempster Street Beach, the place where Sam proposed to Kaylyn. I always love it when couples choose portrait locations that already belong to their story. A beautiful location is great. A beautiful location with history? Even better.

The beach portion of their day gave us more opportunities to capture that sweet newlywed feeling. Lake Michigan was bright and sparkling, the sand was warm, and the mood shifted into something playful and relaxed. Kaylyn and Sam threw on sunglasses, kicked through the sand, laughed through silly poses, and climbed onto the lifeguard stand for some of the day’s most iconic images.

Were lifeguard-stand portraits on the formal shot list? Probably not. Did they absolutely need to happen? Obviously. That is the beauty of a smaller, more flexible wedding day. I also have to mention that Kaylyn’s bridal look was perfect for the day. Her dress felt modern and effortless, and the chiffon cape added so much versatility.

For the ceremony, it gave her a soft shoulder covering. During portraits, she could flip it back like a neck drape, which looked gorgeous in the breeze and added movement without needing a dramatic veil. Once we reached the beach, she could remove it completely for a clean, modern bridal look with sandy toes and sunglasses.

A piece like that is such a smart choice for an intimate wedding with multiple settings. It changes the look without requiring a full outfit change, photographs beautifully in motion, and adds extra editorial interest to the day without feeling fussy.
