One of the greatest joys of being a family photographer is getting a front-row seat to the special moments that shape a family’s story. I’ve had the privilege of capturing so many beautiful milestones for Alex and Mike—from their first maternity session at a cozy Chicago studio to baby Jordan’s lifestyle newborn session in Oak Park. Now we’re back together again for their Garfield Park Conservatory maternity session as they await the arrival of their second sweet little one.

Garfield Park Conservatory Family Maternity Session
This time around, Alex picked the lush, warm, and beautifully serene Garfield Park Conservatory as the backdrop for their maternity photoshoot. I love switching up locations for each family session while maintaining a cohesive photography style to convey their family’s story with each new chapter. And Garfield Park Conservatory one of my absolute favorites—with vibrant botanicals, tropical warmth (a Chicago must-have in colder months!), and soft natural light filtering through glass panes, it’s the kind of location that makes everyone feel relaxed and comfortable.

Jordan’s Journey into Big Brotherhood
Seeing baby Jordan now toddling around, curious and full of energy, made me wonder where the time has gone—I still vividly remember capturing his newborn pictures! As I watched him explore the plants and flowers, I saw a little boy blissfully unaware of how his life is about to change. Jordan may not yet fully comprehend what’s around the corner, but he is soon going to gain a lifelong friend, co-conspirator, and yes, occasional rival in his baby sister.

From Only Child to Super Sibling:
How to Make the Big Transition a Beautiful One
Navigating this transition from only child to big brother or sister can be sweet but challenging for little ones. As a mama myself (and as a photographer who has witnessed this big transition countless times), I know how important it is to thoughtfully prepare older siblings for the arrival of a new babe. Here are a few tried-and-true methods for helping your child feel valued and included during maternity sessions and beyond.
Give Them a Special Role
During our Garfield Park Conservatory photoshoot, Jordan was our official “helper,” holding hands with mom, offering gentle kisses to her belly, and pointing out interesting flowers along our path. Giving kids a clear “job” in the photoshoot makes them feel important and needed as they step into their new role as big sibling. Whether they’re helping you find pretty spots to take photos, gently cuddling your belly, or holding a meaningful prop, a special role can make a huge difference.
You can continue this concept at home, too! Involve them in decorating or preparing the nursery and give them choices or special jobs throughout the process.
Follow Their Lead (and Be Flexible!)
If you’ve been there, you know toddlers have their own agenda, and your photoshoot might not look exactly as planned in your Pinterest board. But that’s exactly what makes it real and special. During Alex and Mike’s session, when Jordan felt distracted or restless, we paused to allow him to explore safely. Giving your child room to move around and have fun alleviates stress and frustration—not just for them, but for parents, too.
Bonus: letting kids lead the way often results in the sweetest candid photos.
Talk About Baby & Big Sibling’s New Role with Excitement
Toddlers and young kids thrive on routine and familiarity; a new baby can feel like a sudden, big shift. Gradually introduce the idea of the new baby often. During the session, Alex and Mike talked excitedly with Jordan about how great of a big brother he’ll be, casually mentioning baby’s upcoming arrival and pointing to Mom’s belly. Making the new baby part of a loving and positive narrative helps older siblings feel more secure, involved, and emotionally prepared.
Make Special One-on-One Time
As baby’s arrival draws closer, intentionally carve out quality time with your older child. Whether it’s playing at the park, setting up watercolor paints for an afternoon art project, or reading extra bedtime stories, these one-on-one moments reinforce the fact that they’re still special, seen, and oh so loved. You could even incorporate books that celebrate siblings or tell a story about what it’s like to become a big brother or sister.
Spending intentional time together is a reminder that while some things are changing, Mom and Dad’s love is constant and unshakeable.
Celebrate Them for Who They Are Right Now
Kids hear a lot about how great it will be to be a big sibling. Sometimes it can feel overwhelming or even stressful. While being excited about what’s ahead, don’t forget to celebrate your child exactly as they are in the present. During the photoshoot, we took plenty of solo portraits of Jordan, celebrating his personality and the sweet individuality he brings to this family. These photos honor him, capturing this fleeting stage of his life before a big sibling transition.
Keep Routines Consistent and Predictable
This doesn’t pertain to our session so much as one mama’s tip to another. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that children crave stability, especially when big changes are coming. Schedules will have to change, but keeping some things as consistent as possible will help your oldest. Keep packing that favorite snack and singing your silly goodnight song. If you typically to go to the park on Saturday mornings, when possible, pack the stroller and head out for your regular dose of fresh air. Do you have snack time at 3 pm? Set a reminder to take a break around that time. They’ll find comfort in the routine.

The Best is Yet to Come—Again!
As our session came to an end, hugs were exchanged, and everyone was feeling relaxed and happy. Alex and Mike left with beautiful photos to remember this precious season, and Jordan left feeling special, loved, and seen. I can’t wait to see him next as he proudly introduces me to his new baby brother.
Stay tuned for their newborn session—I promise it’s going to be full of warmth, laughter, and more heart-melting sibling moments.
